QUOTES:
"Blizzards, gale-force winds and torrential rain made several cities'
events more damp squib than raucous celebration and brought disappointment
to hundreds of thousands of revellers. Firework displays and concerts were
cancelled in Liverpool, Newcastle, Aberdeen and Edinburgh - usually home to
one of Britain's largest New Year's Eve street parties.
The icy conditions and snowfalls reached as far south as Norfolk, with
temperatures dipping below freezing across much of Britain.
Police said winds, gusting up to 48mph, were causing structural damage to
both temporary and permanent structures in the city centre.
The main event, a sell-out concert headlined by the pop group Erasure, was
called off at around 10pm and the street party and the fireworks were
cancelled an hour later.
More than 50,000 people were disappointed by the last-minute cancellation
of Aberdeen's main celebrations while firework displays were postponed in
Liverpool, Newcastle and Gateshead because of winds and heavy snow.
Around 10,000 homes in Scotland were left without power yesterday and
engineers worked throughout the day to reconnect supplies.
Firemen had to fight their way through a blizzard to reach the blaze. A
neighbour of the family said: "Conditions were so bad that you could hardly
see across the street."
The M62 between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire was reduced to one
lane by drifting snow, although many roads began reopening yesterday. A
foot of snow was recorded at Fylingdales in North Yorkshire.
More than 600 homes in east Lancashire were left without electricity after
heavy snow brought down power lines. Engineers had difficulty reaching
parts of the area because of the snowfall."
