Heavy rains off the Caspian Sea Sunday into Monday doused
northern Iran. At Ramsar, rainfall was 5.6 inches within 30 hours.
Far to the south, heavy rain and snow hit the Zagros Mountains. At
Yasuj, the two-day soaking which featured a burst of wet snow made
for 3.7 inches of water equivalent.
Heavy tropical rains of late have washed the South Pacific island
of Futuna. Rainfall within 72 hours was more than 14 inches at Leava
Sigave.
Heavy rains Monday pelted New Caledonia. At Noumea, rainfall was
6.6 inches within nine hours.
Monday began with a blanket of snow over Torino in northern Italy.
Snow 5 inches deep was observed. The storm struck much harder along
the southern Alps straddling the Italy-Switzerland border. In
southernmost Switzerland, the storm within two days left snow and rain
equivalent to 3.6 inches over Locarno. Snowfall of 14 inches was
reported.
Monday, a weak tropical cyclone is over the western South Indian
Ocean. Early Monday morning, EST, the week storm is about 800 miles
northeast of Mauritius. Its highest winds being no more than 30 mph,
the cyclone is drifting towards the west-southwest at 9 mph. It is
forecast to head towards the southwest over water for the next two
to three days.
