A northbound cold front instigated soaking thunderstorms and
showers over parts of middle South America Saturday to Sunday. Some
of the heaviest cloudbursts broke over Bolivia. Here, the city of
Rurrenabaque collected 5.0 inches of rain within 30 hours as Sunday
afternoon. Rainfall during the same time was 4.4 inches at Tarija.
Sunday was abnormally hot along some coastal sections of South
Australia. The seaside town of Ceduna, for example, surged to at
least 103 degrees on stiff northerly winds. The average high here
near the end of December is about 79 degrees.
Heavy rain, as well as some snow, fell on parts of Iran on
Saturday. Both Agha Jari and Gach Saran picked up nearly an inch and
a half of rain. At Yasoge, rain and heavy thunderstorms were followed
by snow. Total precipitation was over 2 and a half inches, including
at least an inch of snow. So far, this wet weather has stayed off to
the north of Bam, the city devastated by the recent powerful
earthquake.
Wintry weather spread over parts of the U.K. over the weekend.
Heavy showers of snow and sleet pelted parts of Scotland as well as
northwestern and central England. Accumulating snow made travel
hazardous over some of the higher elevations.
