Tropical Depression 27W, located about 420 miles east of Manila,
Philippines, regenerated a bit Friday evening and regained tropical
storm status with sustained winds of 40 mph. The tropical storm
continues to drift sluggishly toward the west-southwest at about 5
mph. This weather maker will likely bring some heavy rainfall to
portions of the Philippines in the next few days.
A storm that earlier this week spread heavy snows and rains over
much of the Balkan Peninsula Thursday and Friday set sights upon
Anatolia, the peninsula that makes up the core of Turkey. Heavy
rains, two bouts of it, washed the southwestern coast leaving 12.2
inches within 72 hours over Antalya. Inland, rain gave way to heavy,
wet snow over Isparta. Water equivalent was 4.6 inches and snowfall
15 inches.
Southeastern Africa Friday had some blistering heat. At Skukuza
camp in the Kruger National Park of South Africa, Friday was the
hottest of three-straight 100-degree days in reaching 110. In
neighboring southern Mozambique, Maputo topped out near 106 degrees,
and Changalane, 108.
