Snow whitened much of the Balkan Peninsula of Europe for Christmas
Day. Snowfall was greatest over southern Romania, eastern Serbia and
northern Bulgaria. In Romania, the snowfall was nearly 10 inches, and
at the height of the storm Wednesday, winds topping 40 mph made for a
near blizzard. Craiova, Romania, picked up 14 inches of new snow. Over
the hills of eastern Serbia, new snowfall atop Crni Vrh was at least
18 inches. In towns, Valjevo and Plevlja each packed in 13 inches with
12 inches blanketing Sjenica. Bulgaria registered at least 14 inches
at Veliko Turnovo, and 11 inches at Lovech.
Fiery heat burned a swatch of western Australia for Christmas Eve
and Christmas Day. Nyang had two-straight mid afternoons of 115-degree
heat. Thursday, Gascoyne Junction was as hot. At the far end of the
continent, Sydney, Australia's biggest city, topped out at 100
yuletide degrees.
A tropical storm was far to the east of the Philippines Christmas
Day. Thursday evening, EST, the unnamed storm (27W) was 525
miles east of Manila with 45-mph highest sustained winds.
The storm was drifting westward at 9 mph. The storm is expected to
continue on a westward or even west-southwestward track over the next
couple of days, perhaps threatening the Philippines with heavy
rainfall.
The tiny storm-prone islands off British Columbia, Canada, endured
another bout of severe weather this midweek. Near hurricane-strength
winds lashed Sartine Island Wednesday. Sustained winds above 60 mph
were clocked for about 12 hours; they peaked a little above 75 mph.
Highest gusts were 95-100 mph. Nearby Solander Island also withstood
very high winds. Top sustained winds above 70 mph were also registered
here, and peak gusts were above 85 mph.
