"Rescuers used their bare hands and shovels in the Leyte and Mindanao
islands of the Philippines yesterday to search for missing friends and
relatives after landslides, flash floods and a tornado killed scores of people.

Hopes are fading for 114 people believed missing, and there are fears the
death toll could reach 200.

Thirty-three people were killed and 65 are missing in landslides triggered
by days of heavy rains in Leyte's San Francisco town, the civil defence
operations chief, Olive Lucas, said.

Another 27 died in a similar disaster in nearby Liloan, while one resident
drowned in Maasin.

Forty-nine people were missing after a tornado hit a village in San Ricardo
town, she said."
