Cyclone Debbie was making landfall in Australia's Northern
Territory on Saturday afternoon. The center was along the coast a short
distance to the west of Maningrida. At its peak, Debbie had top
sustained winds of 75 mph, but will likely now weaken moving over
land. Darwin may in time feel the breath of Debbie; namely, her
squalls and heavy downpours.
Long-lived Tropical Cyclone Cela is moving toward cooler waters to
the southwest of the southern tip of Madagascar. With this move, the
storm is beginning to weaken with top sustained winds now under 70 mph
as of Saturday afternoon. Cela is bound for open southern seas and
eventual dissipation at sea as a named tropical cyclone.
Southeastern Philippines Saturday got a break from the week's
torrential, flooding rains which have proven to be destructive and
deadly on the island of Leyte. At one city near the northern end of
Mindanao Island, Surigoa, incomplete weather observations hinted at
weekly rainfall of about 24 inches -- two feet -- as of early
Saturday, local time.
Scattered downpours late this week have come in the midst of the
dry season in Bangladesh and in India. Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital,
Friday collected 1.5 inches of rain. The mean rainfall for all of
December here is about 0.2 of an inch. In nearby India, rainfall of
2.0 inches at Imphal Friday into Saturday was five-fold the mean
rainfall for all of December. And at the southern end of India, a
burst of rain Saturday amounted to 3.8 inches versus the mean December
rainfall of 1.6 inches.
A burst of snow over Nagoya, Japan, early Saturday amounted to 4
inches. The snow was somewhat unusual for the city which is rather
sheltered from snows off the Sea of Japan. Meantime, right along the
length of this stormy sea, bursts of cold rain, snow and soft hail,
some with thunder and lightning, Friday and Saturday were sent flying
in the face of winds gusting 40-60 mph. Water equivalent of 1.0-3.0
inches was plentiful, and in the hills at least 1000 feet above sea
level, this made for snowfall to three feet or more.
A storm lashed the U.K. on Saturday with strong winds, heavy rain
and even snow. Wind gusts of 25-50 mph buffeted many parts of the
country while nearly an inch of rain soaked some areas. In Scotland,
the Highlands were being blanketed by snow.
