The Australian state of South Australia Friday withered under
blistering sun. A wide swatch of the state's desert outback topped 110
degrees led by Tarcoola, where a high of 116 degrees was observed.
Highs of at least 113 degrees were observed at Coober Pedy and Marree.
Meantime, at Tarcoola, a late-day shower trimmed the temperature by 30
degrees within three hours.
Tropical Cyclone Cela is still spinning over the southern
Mozambique Channel off southwestern Madagascar. Late Friday afternoon,
EST, Cela is centered about 150 miles off southwestern Madagascar.
Drifting towards the southeast at 10 mph, Cela owns highest sustained
winds of 75 mph. Forecasts are for Cela to head towards the south and
southeast for the next two days moving away from southwestern
Madagascar.
Cyclone Debbie is lurking off northernmost Australia. Late Friday
afternoon, EST, Debbie is over the Arafura Sea some 250 miles
east-northeast of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Debbie is
lately drifting mostly to the west-southwest at 3-4 mph with top
sustained winds of 55-60 mph. Debbie is forecast to head towards the
south and west for the next two to three days, so it likely will pose
a threat of landfall to northernmost Australia.
Soaking rains have struck the southern Philippines this week.
Eastern and northern Mindanao Island has been especially rainy.
Rainfall as of early Friday was nearly 20 inches at Surigao, where
spotty reporting made reckoning of actual rainfall difficult.
Hinatuan, meanwhile, was doused by 8.2 inches of rain within 24 hours
alone as Thursday morning, local time. On Leyte Island, Maasin
collected at least 9.8 inches of rain from Wednesday morning through
Thursday evening.
Downpours have come during the midst of the dry season in parts
of Bangladesh. Dhaka, the capital city, collected 1.5 inches of rain
Thursday to Friday, local time. The mean rainfall for all of December
here is about 0.2 of an inch.
Mornings have been cold recently over the high ground of Mexico's
Chihuahua state. The town of Temosachic, for example, registered lows
of 11, 9 and 11 degrees, respectively, on Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday.
