Long-lived Tropical Cyclone Cela drifted off western Madagascar early
Wednesday. Early Wednesday morning, EST, Cela is 170 miles west of
Morombe, Madagascar. Its top winds between 60 and 65 mph, Cela is
drifting southwestwards at 4 to 5 mph. Cela is forecast to follow an
open-water path for the next two to three days while heading mostly
towards the south. In its brush with Madagascar, Cela poured 14.2
inches of rain over Morombe within two days, though mostly within 24
hours.
A severe storm whipped the greater Aegean Sea with high winds,
cold rain and wet snow Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the Greek
islands, Naxos, clocked steady north winds between 55 and 60 mph.
Gusts neared 50 mph amidst snow and rain at Athens, and squally gusts
hit 55 mph at Iraklion, Crete. Raw, cold winds gusting 50-55 mph blew
in a fall of wet snow and rain at Istanbul, Turkey. Farther east,
Larnaca, Cyprus, within two days picked of 4.2 inches of rain from
this storm.
Hills in southeastern Italy picked up more snow Tuesday into
Wednesday; it was the second such snow storm so far this month. New
snowfall was 10 inches at Campobasso. The cold, but not snow, was
felt at Rome, were lows ranged from 25 to 30 degrees, or 15 to 20
degrees below average.
