Tropical Cyclone 03B made landfall on the coast of India's Andhra
Pradesh Province Monday afternoon, EST. The storm had winds close to
60 mph as it made landfall close to False Divi Point, and rainfall at
nearby Machilipatnam was 5.98 inches in less than 24 hours. The
cyclone will weaken rapidly as it moves northward over India, but it
will bring the threat for heavy rain, flooding, and mudslides.
Tropical Cyclone Cela is drifting through the Mozambique Channel, a
body of water separating Madagascar from the African mainland. Monday
morning, EST, Cela was centered 165 miles southeast of Mozambique,
moving almost due south-southwest at 9 mph. Highest sustained winds
were 40 mph. Cela is forecast to continue on a southward path and
weaken over the next couple of days.
A strong cold front moved through central Europe Monday morning
ushering in a blast of much colder air into the region. In Vienna,
Austria, temperatures soared to a mild 48 degrees ahead of the front
Sunday, which is 11 degrees above normal. As the front moved through
Monday morning it produced some snow and thunder as the temperature
plunged 9 degrees in 40 minutes. Temperatures have been holding steady
in the 30s since the front's passage. However, wind gusts past 40 mph
are making it feel like it is only in the lower 20s.
A frontal system moving into the Middle East Monday, lashed
southwest Turkey with heavy rainfall late Sunday and Sunday night.
Antalya, Turkey was especially hard hit as the city was drenched by
2.75 inches of rain in 18 hours. Over half of this amount fell within
6 hours in a cloudburst Sunday night into Monday morning.
