Late Friday through Saturday, 11.9 inches of rain pelted Kuantan,
Malaysia. What is more, this city on the eastern side of the Malay
Peninsula was washed in about 32 inches of rain beginning last Sunday.
December is a wet month: mean rainfall is about 22 inches.
Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, picked up 4.8 inches of rain Thursday
night and Friday. In tandem with a previous 24-hour outpouring,
rainfall was 15.1 inches over 48 hours.
Heavy rains lingered in North Africa into Saturday. Two-day
rainfall was 2-5 inches over much of Tunisia including the area of
Tunis, the capital. Tabarka saw 4.9 inches, and Siliana, 4.7. In
nearby Algeria, 5.8 inches of rain doused Tebessa within 48 hours.
Cold northerly winds swept through the gap between high mountains
in Afghanistan and Iran to whip up unusually severe and far-reaching
dust storms Friday and Saturday. Much of the dust may have been
lofted from the desert of Sistan, a plain straddling the Iran-Afghan
border. The northerly winds fanned out with their burden of dust in a
vast swath of southeastern Iran and Southwestern Pakistan. Even the
open sea was little hindrance to the thick dust clouds; they poured
into northeastern Arabia cutting visibility to 100 yards and less in
northern Oman and nearby United Arab Emirates.
Tropical Cyclone 03B developed over the southern Bay of Bengal
Saturday. As of Saturday afternoon, EST, the cyclone had top
sustained winds near 40 mph. 03B was centered 475 miles to the
east-southeast of Madras, India and was moving toward the
west-northwest at 8 mph. Forecasts are for a drift towards the
west-northwest leading early next week to an eventual landfall in
southeastern India and perhaps northern Sri Lanka.
Tropical Cyclone Cela is still loitering off western Madagascar.
Early Saturday morning, EST, Cela is less than 50 miles west-southwest
of Cape Saint Andre. The nearly-stationary storm has highest sustained
winds of 40 mph. Cela is forecast to drift southwards for the next
few days over the Mozambique Channel near western Madagascar.
