A cold start for northern Canada Wednesday. At Key Lake,
Saskatchewan, the low was 49 degrees below zero.
With 45-mph steady winds whipping across the western Sahara of
southwestern Algeria Wednesday, Tindouf was shrouding in a blinding
dust storm.
Tuesday was unusually hot in South Africa's Kruger National Park.
The high of 110 degrees registered at Skukuza Camp was almost 25
degrees above average.
Torrential rains began last Sunday over the eastern side of the
Malay Peninsula. By Tuesday evening, local time, rainfall was 19.5
inches at Kuantan, Malaysia. With time the rains tended to shift
northwards and in southern Thailand, two-day rainfall of 12.6 inches
was reported from Narathiwat whereas a one-day fall of 7.4 inches was
observed at Nakhon Si Thamarat.
Tropical Cyclone Cela crossed northern Madagascar leaving locally
excessive rains late Tuesday into Wednesday. As of Wednesday evening,
EST, Cela was over the northern Mozambique Channel a little west of
northern Madagascar. The storm had top winds of only 30 mph, but could
regain some strength as it heads southwestward. Meantime, rainfall
from the cyclone was 6.7 at Sambava in northeastern Madagascar.
Cyclone Jana, over the open eastern Indian Ocean, maintained
85-mph sustained winds Wednesday evening, EST. The core of Jana was
210 miles south-southeast of of Australia's Cocos Islands. Jana was
expected to continue an open water track toward the southwest and
weaken in the next 24-48 hours.
