[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Monday, Dec 08

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Mon Dec 08 2003 - 19:40:01 EST

December 8, 2003 5:34 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Cela is over the Indian Ocean moving toward
northern Madagascar. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the core of Cela is
within 125 miles east of the northern tip of Madagascar. Packing
50-mph top sustained winds, Cela is drifting towards the west at 9
mph. Cela is forecast to continue heading towards the west and may
reach northern Madagascar within 12 to 24 hours.

Another tropical cyclone, Jana, has strengthened markedly over the
eastern Indian Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Jana is located
about 250 miles north-northeast of Australia's Cocos Islands, which
are southwest of southern Sumatra, Indonesia. Drifting towards the
south-southeast at 5 to 6 mph, Jana has highest sustained winds of 75
mph. Jana is forecast to head mostly towards the south for the next
two days; it would brush the Cocos Islands along such a path.

Some of Canada's Atlantic land shared in the blizzard that
whipped New England late last week. In New Brunswick, Moncton picked
up 22 inches of snow whipped by gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island, had 17 inches of near, wind-swept snow.

High winds lashed the Adriatic shores of Croatia last weekend. At
Dubrovnik, these off-shore winds gusted 50 to 70 mph. Gusts to 60 mph
also swept Split.

Monday was rather chilly throughout the United Kingdom, and some
places were downright cold. One such location was Glasgow, Scotland.
Thick fog settled over this city Sunday night as the temperature
dipped to 19 degrees. The foggy shroud held stubbornly through Tuesday
keeping the visibility largely at 1/8 of a mile or less. The daytime
temperature was no higher than 27 degrees; 30 degrees was reached
after sunset when the fog thinned. An average day at this time of the
year here would have a low of 37 and a high of 45.

Monday, Ulaanbaatar remained in the grip of a severe cold wave
that saw the Mongolian capital city fail to reach 0 degrees for a
fourth straight day and the seventh time already in December. Monday's
high of minus-6 degrees followed a low of minus-25. Moreover, Sunday
was the coldest day so far this winter with a low of minus-30 degrees
and a high of minus-12. The average daily high during this time of
the year is in the lower to middle 10s as the mean daily low dips to
about 5 degrees below zero.
