November was a record-setting month in terms of excessive rainfall
in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The highest tallies were
logged in Puerto Rico. Topping the list of rainy-weary sites was
Naguabo with monthly rainfall of 43.0 inches, or about five times the
November mean. Luquillo collected 31.2 inches of rain during the
month, and there were many sites that totaled 15-30 inches. On the
island of Saint Thomas, Charlotte Amalie was soaked by 15.5 inches of
rain surpassing the former November record of 14.7 inches set in 1984.
The November rainfall record also fell at Christiansted, Saint Croix,
where 17.7 inches of rain bested the 17.0-inch tally from 1961; while
the month as a whole was wet here, downpours left more than 14 inches
November 10-14. While not a confirmed record, Cruz Bay, Saint John,
was soaked by 18.2 inches of rain last month. These excessive rains
caused widespread flooding leading to millions of dollars in damages.
Long-lived, long-traveled Tropical Storm, and erstwhile powerful
Typhoon, Lupit is now in its dying throes, at least with respect to
its tropical status. Early Monday morning, EST, Lupit is nearly 400
miles south-southeast of Tokyo, Japan, with highest sustained winds
down to 70 mph. Also near the small Nampo Islands of Japan, the storm
is scooting towards the northeast at a brisk 30 mph. Forecasters have
pegged Lupit to weaken quickly and to loose tropical status within 24
to 36 hours while racing towards the open North Pacific Ocean.
Hachijo Jima, one of Japan's Nampo Islands, was rocked by gales
and heavy rains Sunday and Monday. Late Monday, local time, a few
gusts topped hurricane strength, and rainfall neared six inches within
36 hours.
Northwestern Australia withered in 110-degree heat Monday
afternoon. Roebourne reached at least 115 degrees by mid afternoon.
At Dampier, sea breezes stemmed the heat -- after a high of 114
degrees was set. Another hot spot, Marble Bar, was at least 113
degrees in the afternoon.
The passage of a cold front instigated flooding rains in parts of
northern Honduras late last week and during the weekend. Greater La
Ceiba, a city on the Caribbean coast, was hit by a staggering amount
of rain -- nearly 25 inches within 60 hours as of early morning,
Monday.
The cold has been even harsher than usual lately in Siberia's Pole
of Cold. At Oymyakon, the temperature dropped to 63 degrees below zero
early Tuesday morning, local time, registering it as the eleventh
consecutive day to dip 60 or more degrees below zero. The average low
during this spell has ranged from minus-43 degrees to minus-48.
Monday's high of minus-58 degrees was more than 15 degrees lower than
average.
