Saturday's heat was severe in the far-northwest of Australia. East
of the tropical King Sound in the state of Western Australia, a few
temperatures above 110 degrees were observed, one of these being the
town of Derby. Well to the southwest, the sea-side town of Dampier had
its second-straight high of 110. Sunday, Mandora, along Eighty Mile
Beach, notched 110 degrees, good for the world's highest temperature.
It has been raining nearly non-stop across the Korean Peninsula
since Friday, local time, but even so, rain amounts have not been
excessive. The soaking rain brought 3.37 inches to Sokch'o, 3.32 inches
to Kangnung and 3.27 inches to Uijongbu.
Two separate thunderstorms unleashed torrents of rain at Safita,
Syria, where 3.37 inches collected this weekend. Latakia, along the
eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, had 2.65 inches. Meanwhile,
Basel Assad International Airport, just south of Latakia, had
thunderstorms with hail. Total rainfall there was 2.08 inches.
In less than 48 hours Friday afternoon through Saturday night,
local time, rainfall was 6.04 inches at Ramsar in northern Iran.
Unusual warmth has spread over Scandinavia of late. Tafjord,
Norway, a town that lies as far north as Anchorage, Alaska, set highs
of 59 and 60 degrees, respectively, on Friday and Saturday. The
normal high for this time of year is about 41 degrees.
Saturday was another morning of harsh, and in some areas
near-record, cold over the plains of central Canada. In southern
Saskatchewan, Estevan, which Friday set a new record low of minus-16
degrees, on Saturday dipped 8 below -- 5 degrees shy of a record. In
southern Manitoba, Winnipeg undercut their old daily record by a
degree in reaching minus-5 degrees. Alberta also had some unusual
cold: the low of minus-7 degrees at Lethbridge was 31 degrees below
average.
