Early Friday, near-record cold fanned out across central Canada.
In southern Saskatchewan, at least one daily record low was broken,
that being at Estevan. The reading of 15 degrees below zero bested
the old mark of 11 below. The mean low for the day was 21 degrees.
Far to the north, Key Lake dipped 35 degrees below zero, or about 45
degrees below average for the date; it might have been colder still,
as the temperature soared well before daybreak on southwesterly
breezes. In southern Manitoba, Winnipeg bottomed at minus-5, or two
degrees shy of a daily record low. On Manitoba's shores, Churchill
was swept by a blizzard having 40-mph gusts and near-whiteouts at
temperatures near 5 degrees much of Thursday and Thursday night.
Northwestern Australia baked on Friday as the mid-day sun angle
reached near vertical. The 110-degree mark was reached near the sea
at Dampier and Port Hedland, Western Australia. Inland, it was about as
hot in the area of Marble Bar and Camballin, also in Western
Australia.
Its been unseasonably mild throughout the British Isles lately,
and Friday was especially warm in relation to climatological averages
in northeastern Scotland. Here, southeasterly winds blowing down the
Scottish Highlands boosted the temperature to 66 degrees at Kinloss
whereas the daily mean high was in the upper 40s.
A strong North Atlantic Storm whipped parts of Iceland with high
winds late in the week. On Heimaey Island, sustained winds rose above
50 mph Thursday evening, local time, and stayed above this threshold
until late Friday at Vestmannaeyjar. Steady winds of 65 mph were
clocked Thursday night. The strong winds came with rain, including a
burst that left 1.0 inch within six hours.
