Southeastern Russia, Mongolia and northeast China have turned very
cold the past couple of days. Toko, Russia, failed to get any higher
than -7 all day Wednesday, then plummeted to -43 Wednesday night.
Thursday's high was minus-8 degrees. Temperatures fell below -20
across parts of northern Mongolia Wednesday night and the cold air has
pushed on southward south through northeast China all the way to
Beijing. Rain in the Chinese capital turned to wet snow Thursday.
Beijing normally gets only a few inches of snow a year as winters are
normally very dry.
Deep tropical moisture has been persistent across the island nation
of Sri Lanka the past few days, resulting in some locally heavy rainfall.
Since Tuesday, both Batticaloa and Colombo have had nearly 5 inches
of rain.
Some soaking thunderstorms struck southwestern Turkey on Thursday.
At Mugla, downpours left 4.5 inches of rain within six hours and about
4.7 inches overall.
Thursday, the core of a very large and bitterly cold air mass lay
over central Canada. At Shepherd Bay, Nunavut, afternoon temperatures
hovered in the lower minus-30s, about 35 degrees below average. The
morning low, 36 degrees below zero, was 30 degrees below the mean low
for the date.
Rainfall on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island was 2.7
inches at Haast this midweek. Most of this came during an 18-hour
spell on Thursday.
