Former Typhoon Melor has weakened to a tropical storm over the
Luzon Strait. Sunday afternoon, EDT, the storm, with sustained winds
of 66 mph, was centered just off the southern coast of Taiwan near
22.3 degrees north and 121.3 degrees east. This is about 190 miles
south of Taipei, Taiwan. Melor was moving toward the north-northeast
at 9 mph. The storm will continue heading north-northeastward along
the east coast of Taiwan over the next 24-36 hours. Rainfall has been
heavy surrounding Melor. Heng'chun, on the southern tip of Taiwan,
measured over 17 inches of rain since Saturday night. Over 7 inches
was recorded at T'aitung.
The storm which lashed northern Italy Friday into Saturday then
headed to the north and east. In Austria, snowfall on Sonnblick
Mountain was 2 feet in 30 hours ending early Sunday, local time. This
brought the snow cover there to nearly 80 inches. In Hungary, an inch
and a half of rain drenched Pecs. To the south, Miksic and Titograd
also had 1-2 inches of rain.
A cluster of heavy thunderstorms drenched parts of western Brazil
and northeastern Peru on Saturday and Saturday night. Eirunepe, in
the western part of Brazil's vast state of Amazonas, collected nearly
5 inches of rain during that time. To the south in Acre, just under 4
inches fell in Tarauaca. Across the border in Peru, Iquitos picked up
3.66 inches.
In Antarctica, a storm combining strong wind, heavy snow and
blowing snow has been raging since Thursday at Novolazarevskaya. At
the worst of the storm, sustained winds reached 70 mph at a
temperature of 20 degrees. Throughout the storm, sustained winds have
averaged 35-60 mph and visibility has been near zero.
