Typhoon Melor, which appears to have weakened as it interacted
with the northern mountains of Luzon Islands, Philippines, continues
to move off to the north-northwest Saturday evening, EST. Melor is
expected to weaken further into a tropical storm Sunday as is heads
to the southwest of Taiwan. The storm will interact with a
cold front dropping southeastward from mainland China, bringing heavy
rainfall to portions of Taiwan into early next week. Lan Yu, a tiny
island off the southeast coast of Taiwan, has already had more than 2
inches of rain. Several more inches of rain could fall between now and
Monday.

Severe winds and rains pounded northern Italy Friday into
Saturday. At Capo Mele on the Riviera west of Genova, rainfall was
5.2 inches within little more than 24 hours. Worse, winds at the
height of the storm Friday evening blew 60 to 85 mph for several
hours. Spared the brunt of the strong winds, Locarno, in Switzerland
north of Milano, was doused with rainfall of 6.2 inches.

A severe wintry storm blasted Mongolia with high winds Friday and
Saturday. Across the northern half, snowfall of up to one foot was
whipped about by winds gusting 50 mph and more. In drier southern
Mongolia, the storm's hazard was blowing dust along with the powerful
winds. Steady -- and freezing cold -- winds of 50 to 60 mph were
clocked in a few sites over the Gobi, Mongolia's vast desert. Dust
storms cut visibility to one hundred yards or less.

A blizzard with 80-mph steady winds lashed the Maitri station of
India, which is set along the Princess Astrid Coast of East
Antarctica.

Saturday morning, winds gusted to 71 mph at Punta Arenas, Chile's
most southerly city.

Tampico, Mexico, was inundated with 3.7 inches of rain Friday
night into Saturday morning.
