"EDDICK - A common afternoon Florida thunderstorm that was an inconvenience
for many people on Tuesday was a disaster for a herd of registered Angus
cows from nationally recognized breeding lines.

Rose and Glenn Cameron, owners of Cameron Bend Angus Ranch in Hawthorne,
lost 22 pregnant cows out of the herd of about 100 in a Marion County
pasture they were leasing at CloverLeaf Farms.

David Bray, an animal science extension specialist for the Institute of
Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida, said the fate
of the Camerons' livestock is an unfortunate but not a rare situation.

"What happens is that lightning will hit a tree and then go down to the
ground and electrocute the cows," Bray said. "This is somewhat common in
Florida because we have a lot of cows outside, but it also happens up north
when cows are under trees during storms.""
