A tropical depression over the South China Sea has yet to
strengthen meaningfully since taking shape early in the week. As of
early Wednesday morning, EDT, this depression is 310 miles
south-southeast of Hong Kong, and 365 miles east of Sanya, Hainan
Island. Drifting lazily towards the northwest at less than 5 mph, the
low has highest winds of less than 30 mph. Forecasts still allow that
the depression might become a tropical storm, and an overall heading
towards the west-northwest is indicated.
Wednesday, Nora clung barely to its status as a tropical
depression south of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. Early
Wednesday morning, EDT, Nora is 170 miles south-southeast of Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico. Having highest sustained winds of less than 30 mph, Nora
is heading towards the east at 12 to 13 mph. Nora is forecast enter
the southern Gulf of California whilst turning towards the northwest
and the north. There is still some chance that Nora would strengthen
enough to regain storm status.
Monday through Wednesday, rainfall was more than 12 inches
at Balasore, India. Late Tuesday to early Wednesday, rainfall of 6.5
inches doused Calcutta. Rainfall of late was more than 7 inches at
Jagdalpur.
Pounded by a wave of storms, the top of Germany's high peak,
Zugspitze, has garnered a deep snow blanket within the last week. The
latest wave, which began early Tuesday, hiked the snow depth by 14
inches whilst boosting water equivalent by 2.7 inches. The weather
observatory showed 41 inches of snow on the ground as of early
afternoon, local time, Wednesday. Weather observations on the
Zugspitze are taken at a height of 9718 feet above sea level.
Tuesday was yet another day of unusual warmth across central
Canada. Highs of 75 to 85 degrees -- up to 30 degrees above average
-- were set from Alberta to Manitoba. In Saskatchewan, Regina hit 85
degrees -- on average, it only reaches 56 degrees on the date.
Estevan registered 86. In Manitoba, Winnipeg topped out at 81
degrees; Gretna reached 86.
Tuesday, parching "zonda" winds off the Andes of western Argentina
suspended belief -- at least with respect to weather observations. At
San Juan, the temperature soared to 101 degrees as winds wafted down
from the 20,000-foot heights of the Andes. As the temperature soared,
so did the humidity nose dive -- it was 1% as the high was reached.
Even lower humidity -- effectively 0% -- was registered Tuesday
evening, even though lightning of distant thunderstorms flickered.
The zonda is a "down-under" equivalent to the chinook, albeit more
extreme thanks to the greater height of the Andes.
