Dramatically weakened Nora, now only a tropical depression,
drifting lazily over the eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of
Baja California, Mexico. Early Tuesday morning, EDT, Nora is within
270 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Having highest
sustained winds of only 35 mph, Nora is drifting towards the northeast
at a scant 3 mph. Nora is now forecast to head towards the northeast,
eventually crossing southern Baja California. Barring a pick-up in
speed, however, Nora likely will dissipate off shore.
Tropical Storm Olaf is making its landfall from the eastern
Pacific Ocean in southwestern Mexico. Before daybreak Tuesday, EDT,
Olaf is nearly ashore slightly west of Manzanillo. Packing 55-60 mph
top winds, Olaf is drifting northwards at only 5 mph. The core of Olaf
will be inland by mid morning, and the rugged mountains of Jalisco
should quickly rob the storm of any damaging winds. Still, these same
mountains will also wring excessive rains from Olaf making flooding
and mudslides the top threat through the day, Tuesday.
Monday afternoon, EDT, a new tropical depression is gathering
strength over the South China Sea. With top sustained winds a little
shy of 30 mph, the depression is centered 340 miles southeast of Hong
Kong. This cyclone is forecast to maintain a southwestward heading and
to gain strength during the next 2-3 days reaching tropical storm
status by Tuesday. Through Thursday, it is not seen as a threat to
land.
Monday was abnormally hot in most of western Turkey, especially

registered a high of 99 degrees. Along the southern shores of the
Black Sea, Zonguldak soared to 98 degrees whereas the mean daily high
at this time of the year is about 67. Areas north of the Marmara Sea
were generally cooler, although Tekirdag reached 95 degrees and
Istanbul was 16 degrees above average in reaching 85.
Heavy rains that began to pound Balasore, in eastern India, early
Monday amounted to 11.2 inches by Tuesday afternoon, local time.
An early fall storm swept over northwestern Europe with slashing
rains and gale-strength gusts Monday night and Tuesday. In the
Schwarzwald of southwestern Germany, the Feldberg, highest of its many
peaks, was clobbered by snowy winds blowing steadily at 55 to 60 mph.
Monday was unusually warm across the plains of central Canada.
Indeed, between Manitoba and the Rocky Mountains, highs were 15 to 25
degrees above normal. Edmonton, Alberta, hit 80 degrees missing a
114-year record by 1 degree. Winnipeg, Manitoba, where the month
began with a record low of 16, reached 78 degrees on Monday.
