Early Monday, the weakening Nora is still rated a hurricane
southwest of Baja California, Mexico. Well before daybreak, EDT, Nora
is within 340 miles of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Owning highest
sustained winds of 75 mph, Nora is drifting towards the
north-northwest at less than 5 mph. Nora is forecast to weaken further
for the next two to three days while also taking a turn towards the
northeast. Beginning at midweek, Nora will be a threat to southern
Baja California, more so, perhaps, as a rain-maker than wielding high
winds.
Hurricane Olaf seems to have begun to weaken while still posing
a threat to the southwestern shores of Mexico. Early Monday morning,
EDT, Olaf is within 160 miles to the west-southwest of Manzanillo,
Mexico. Its highest sustained winds of 75 mph are barely above the
threshold for a minimal hurricane; Olaf is drifting towards the
north-northwest at 7 mph. Olaf is forecast to skirt the coast of
southwestern Jalisco state Monday into Monday night while taking a
north-northwesterly track. At midweek, the possibility of a landfall
along the southeastern shores of the Gulf of California is indicated.
A strong fall storm dumped heavy snows atop Alpine heights late
last week. The observatory atop Germany's high spot, the Zugspitze,
collected snowfall with water equivalent of 5.2 inches within
three-straight days ended Monday morning. A snow depth of 28 inches
was indicated following the storm, although snowfall may have been
twice as great. The same storm soaked some lower valleys. In nearby
Austria, rainfall was 7.2 inches at Bregenz; of this 5.0 inches fell
within 24 hours ended Monday morning.
Sunday brought another wave of unusual warmth to western Canada.
>From the Rocky Mountains to the Saskatchewan plains, high
temperatures were 15 to 25 degrees above average. At Fort Saint John,
British Columbia, the high of 72 degrees was a new record for the
date, and also the second-straight record high.
Saturday and Sunday, rainfall was 10 inches at Bayan Lepas,
island of Pinang, Malaysia.
