Early Sunday morning, EDT, Hurricane Nora is between the islands
of Clarion and Socorro, eastern Pacific islands well to the south of
Baja California, Mexico. Highest winds about Nora are nearly 100 mph
as it heads towards the northwest at 8 mph. Once away from nearby
islands, Nora is forecast to drift towards the northwest and the
north over open waters for at least the next 48 to 72 hours. Later
next week, Nora could take a run at Baja California.
Also Saturday, Tropical Storm Olaf is still strengthening off
southwestern Mexico. Well before daybreak, EDT, Olaf is about 165
miles southwest of Ixtapa, Mexico, with top sustained winds of 60-65
mph. The storm is moving towards the northwest at 9 mph. Olaf is seen
following a northwesterly path for at least the next 48 to 72 hours.
Such a path could bring storm -- maybe hurricane -- strength winds
near the coast of Jalisco state. Meantime, rainfall bolstered in part
by Olaf amounted to 3.7 inches at Acapulco, Mexico.
Abnormal warmth hung on through Saturday in much of western and
northwestern Canada. Highs were in the 70s and even above 80 from the
US border northward into southwestern Northwest Territories, where it
was nearly 30 degrees above average. At Fort Saint John in the
northeast of British Columbia, Saturday's high of 77 was a new high
mark for the date.
Calayan, off northern Luzon Island, Philippines, had 24-hour
rainfall of 9.3 inches as of Sunday morning, local time.
