Wednesday, Tropical Storm Abaimba is gathering strength over the
open South Indian Ocean. Before daybreak, EDT, Abaimba is drifting
sluggishly between the Chagos Archipelago and the Seychelles Islands;
its center is 490 miles west-northwest of Diego Garcia. Its highest
sustained winds are now above 55 mph. The cyclone is forecast to pick
up speed -- and strength -- towards the south and west over the next
two to three days. In all likelihood, Abaimba would steer well clear
of any land.
Tuesday afternoon, an atmospheric disturbance over the eastern
North Pacific Ocean near southwestern Mexico is showing hints of
becoming the region's next tropical depression. The area of unsettled
weather is about 190 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and it is
drifting west-northwestward.
The first half of the week saw heavy rains in western Sri Lanka.
At Colombo, two-day rainfall was 6.3 inches.
The transition to September to October was marked by some
relatively unusual thundery downpours in southern Northern Territory,
Australia. Tuesday to early Wednesday, local time, Alice Springs
collected 0.5 of an inch of rainfall. This town, in the Macdonnell
Ranges, receives only 0.4 of an inch of rain, on average, during all
of September, and the mean October rainfall is about 0.8 of an inch.
Wednesday, Wawa, Ontario, began the month with two inches of snow
on the ground.
The early cold snap in middle Canada spread a hard freeze over
fertile plains of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. At Winnipeg, Wednesday
morning's low, 16, bested a 120-year old record low by two degrees.
As the cold poured southwards, so, too, did unusual warmth bathe
Alaska and northwestern Canada. At Fort Liard, NWT, Tuesday's high of
76 degrees was about 30 degrees above average.
