A tropical depression over the Philippine Sea has been given the
name of "Choi-Wan". Early Thursday morning, EDT, Choi-Wan is roughly
300 miles south-southwest Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The depression is
drifting towards the west-northwest at 11 mph with highest sustained
winds of nearly 35 mph. Choi-Wan is forecast to strengthen steadily
through the next two to three days, first as a tropical storm, and
later, even a typhoon. A turn to the right leading to a northeasterly
bearing is also forecast; thus, Choi-Wan would begin to threaten the
southwestern Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa included, by late Saturday,
local time.

Sharing with Tunisia the bountiful rains of late, the island
nation of Malta has been abnormally wet so far this month. The
rainfall of 8.3 inches thus far compares strikingly to the mean
monthly rainfall of 1.1 inches. Indeed, mean yearly rainfall is 20.4
inches.
Greater London basked in 80-degree warmth again on Wednesday. The

Norton. Unseasonable highs in the upper 70s were set in much of the
rest of England and in northern Scotland at Kinloss.
Kenora, Ontario, had 24-hour rainfall of 4.1 inches as of early
Thursday morning.
The mid Korea Peninsula was washed by heavy rains on Thursday. In
northern South Korea, rainfall was 5.6 inches at Ch'unch'on, 4.6
inches at Sokch'o and 4.0 inches at Seoul. Rainfall of 4.2 inches was
observed at Haeju, North Korea.
Now that the rain-giving Southwest Monsoon is waning over South
Asia, it is time to reckon the season's rainfall across India.
Climatologists in India have rated this summer second-wettest within
100 years. Tops for rainfall is said to have been the year 1975.
