"Phone companies from New York to the Carolinas are sandbagging flood-prone
phone hubs that switch calls and are looking to reroute traffic if wind,
rain, floods or power loss down networks.
While most cell phone towers and vaultlike phone facilities are built to
withstand hurricanes, the biggest threat is power loss. Carriers are
readying generators to keep facilities running, just as they did during
last month's blackouts. Some can run 10 hours before refueling.
Verizon has extra fuel and is topping off tanks. AT&T has fuel suppliers
ready. BellSouth has 200 standby generators.
While Sprint PCS' critical hubs have generators, it will bring others to
towers equipped just with batteries, which last four hours on average."
