Linda is now a tropical depression over the eastern North
Pacific Ocean, where it seems unlikely to re-gain storm status.
Linda drifting lazily towards the west.
The atmosphere has become prime for the formation of one or two
tropical storms over the western Pacific Ocean. One area that may
give birth to a tropical cyclone is centered about 300 miles
east-northeast of Manila, Philippines. The other is farther north, or
470 miles south-southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan.
Parts of far eastern Canada were unusually warm, even hot, on
Tuesday. In Labrador, Newfoundland, Goose Bay soared to 88 degrees
whereas an average day in mid September would have a high of 58.
Indeed, this would have been a hot day even during the height of
summer as the average high peaks near 70 in July and August. At
Churchill Falls, also in Labrador and about 150 miles to the west of
Goose Bay, Tuesday was as warm as 82 degrees. There were highs in the
lower 80s on the island of Newfoundland as well.
Late-summer snow has whitened the western Great Plains of Canada.
In Alberta, where snow began to fall along the foot of the Rocky
Mountains early Tuesday, snow lay two inches deep at Calgary at
daybreak, Wednesday. Away from the Rockies, snowfall was 4 inches at
Medicine Hat, where snow cover was also 2 inches early Wednesday. In
nearby Saskatchewan, cold rain and wet snow left water equivalent of
1.0 inches, but only 1 inch of snow depth. Only 10 days earlier, this
area had 90-degree heat.
Much of the United Kingdom and Ireland enjoyed well above normal
late summer warmth Tuesday. London's Heathrow airport registered a
high of 81 degrees versus an average high of 64. Highs in the middle
and upper 70s were common elsewhere in England with Wittering and
Wattisham also touching 80 degrees. In Ireland, Shannon surged to 78
degrees and Dublin notched a 75-degree high; both marks were 12-15
degrees higher than the daily mean.
