Early Friday, Typhoon Maemi roared across The island of Cheju, just
south of the Korean Peninsula. As of mid-morning EDT, the eye of Maemi
was nearing the south coast of South Korea near Yosu. Sustained winds
were near 115 mph with higher gusts. The storm has accelerated and is
now moving towards the north-northeast at 22 mph. The actual eye of
the storm passed just east of the island of Cheju, but sustained winds
were still clocked at 96 mph with higher gusts. Undoubtedly when the
storm plows into southern South Korea in the next couple of hours,
winds of over 100 mph will occur with gusts to 130 mph possible.
Unfortunately tropical moisture ahead of the actual typhoon itself has
brought heavy rain to southern South Korea during the past 24 hours.
There was 2.00 to 4.00 inches of rain in many locations-- Yosu had
nearly 6.00 inches. This has caused rivers to rise quickly even before
the typhoon's rain has arrived. At least the storm is moving quickly,
so rainfall will be limited, but there will be enough rain in southern
South Korea from the typhoon to cause some serious flooding problems
and mudslides are also a possibility in the mountainous terrain.
Heavy rains have hit much of Indochina this week. In recent days,
the downpours have focused upon northern Thailand and parts of nearby
Laos. Phayao, Thailand, was doused by 8.7 inches of rain within 72
hours to Thursday night, local time. The town of Nong Khai, which
lies across the Mekong River from Vientiane, the capital of Laos,
collected 6.5 inches of rain during the same time.
A powerful North Atlantic storm unleashed sustained winds above 45
mph for more than 30 hours Wednesday to Thursday at Vestmannaeyjar,
Heimaey Island, Iceland. At the height of the storm, which harbored
at least some of the energy from the former Hurricane Fabian, winds
blew steadily near 70 mph. As the storm headed across eastern
Iceland heavy rains resulted and Dalatangi had 2.56 inches of rain in
just a few hours time.
