Thursday, Super Typhoon Maemi has pulled away from the
southwestern Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Before daybreak, EDT, the eye of
this still highly-dangerous storm is over the southern East China Sea
100 miles north of Miyako Jima -- the island that was nearly crossed
by its eye -- and 150 miles west of Naha, Okinawa. Packing highest
sustained reckoned at 155 mph, Maemi is drifting towards the north at
5 to 6 mph. Maemi is forecast to accelerate towards the north and the
northeast whilst weakening within the next two days. Along the way,
the southern Korea Peninsula is seen as a likely site for landfall
Friday night and early Saturday, local time. Weather observations were
taken on Miyako Jima right through the height of the storm. They show
rainfall of nearly 18 inches within 36 hours, highest steady winds
above 85 mph, and a pressure down to at least 922 millibars (27.22
inches of mercury). Given the three-hour gap between observations,
even higher sustained winds and lower pressures were undoubtedly
reached.
The first half of the week was excessively rainy in much of
Montenegro. The capital, Podgorica, was soaked by at least 5.2
inches of rain from late Monday through midafternoon Wednesday, local
time; 4.6 inches of this came during the last 18 hours of this
period. The average rainfall here during September is about 4.5
inches. Nearby, the towns of Tivat and Niksic each collected 3.3
inches of rain within 48 hours to late Wednesday.
Two-day rainfall ended late Wednesday morning, local time, was
5.6 inches at Berberati, western Central African Republic. This was
equal to about 65% of the mean rainfall for all of September.
