[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Wednesday, Sep 10

September 10, 2003 9:54 a.m.

Violent, dangerous Super Typhoon Maemi is nearing the
southwestern Ryukyu Islands of Japan packing winds of unbelievable
winds speed. As of early morning Wednesday, EDT, Maemi is less than
100 miles to the southeast of Miyako Jima, an island of the Sakishima
cluster east of Taiwan. The Category-5 class winds about Maemi were
reckoned to be as high as 170 mph; Maemi was drifting towards the
northwest at 5 to 6 mph. Maemi is on a path that would put Miyako
nearest the eye, maybe a direct, devastating strike, before the
typhoon begins to turn northerly and northeasterly over the East
China Sea. Accelerating, the weakening Maemi would threaten southern
Korea and southwestern Japan beginning late Friday, local time.

The week begin with excessive rainfall in northern Vietnam.
Three-day rainfall was 13.3 inches at Thanh Hoa and at Nam Dinh,
and 12.2 inches at Vinh.

A cold front penetrated deep into the heart of South America early
this week. In doing so, the cold front triggered heavy showers and
thunderstorms over a fairly wide area; it also ushered rather cool air
into the region. Some of the heaviest rains came to Bolivia where the
northern town of Santa Ana was doused by 4.2 inches Monday to
midafternoon Tuesday. The average rainfall for all of September here
is 3.1 inches. Tuesday was rather chilly over much of the
midcontinent, too. Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital, for example,
struggled to reach 60 degrees under stubborn overcast whereas an
average day at this time of the year would have a high in the lower
80s.

Central Canada, namely northern Manitoba and northwestern
Ontario, warmed abnormally on Tuesday. Churchill, beside chill waters
of Hudson's Bay, heated to 85 degrees, or 35 degrees above the mean
daily mark of 50. Inland, Gillam hit 88 degrees. Northwestern Ontario
saw 85 degrees at Pickle Lake.

While steamy weather is hardly uncommon over the Bahama Islands,
Tuesday was especially oppressive in some areas. The combination of
strong late summer sunshine, above average heat, a high dew point and
gentle winds yielded an AccuWeather RealFeel Temperature (tm) of 116
degrees at midafternoon in Nassau, the national capital.

As of early Wednesday morning, the 24-hour range in temperature
at the South Pole was between 100 and 90 degrees below zero. More
precisely, the low was 99.6 degrees below zero.
