STATION NOTES From BURNCROSS, SHEFFIELD

August was a very interesting month to
observe it was distinctly lacking in rainfall
11mm in total which is 17% of our local
average. The last appreciable rain fell
on the 25th July. After the heat on the 9th
of August we had 3mm on the 11th of
August then another dry spell up to the
25th of August when in the following 4
days 8mm was recored then the dry spell
commenced again going into September.
There were no storms producing any
heavy rain whatsoever.

The local moors in Derbyshire are tinder dry
and crying for rain. Looking at the local
reserviours the Ladybower complex in
particular the water levels are still
reasonable and nowhere near previous hot
summer of 1976.

August 1991 and 1995 gave 9.6mm of rain
locally and the hot summer of 1976 gave
8.4mm

A local record was broken in the fact that
the average minimum air temperture for
August was 14.2c the figures for the month
broke this record giving 14.3c.

The searing temperature of 33.1c during the
day of August 9th followed by a minimum of
16.8c overnight. gave place to 26.9c during
the 10th with an overnight minimum of 20.0
c giving a temperature range of only 6.9c
in the 24 hour period.

The mean maximum was +4.0c the mean
minimum was + 2.6c with the mean of +3.4c

>From the 1st to the 23rd at no time did the
maximum fall below 20.0 c.
