Italy was hit by some soaking rains Sunday to Monday. In the
south, Ginosa was doused by 3.2 inches of rain in only 12 hours
Monday, and rainfall within 24 hours to late Monday was 2.7 inches at
Santa Maria di Leuca and 2.1 inches on Isola di Ponza (Ponza Island).
The northern city of Ferrara was drenched by 2.4 inches during the
same 24-hour span.
Monday was unseasonably chilly over much of western Russia below a
large, nearly stationary storm. Underneath a thick overcast which shed
light rain and drizzle most of the day, Moscow set a high of only 46
degrees whereas the average high for September 8th is 63.
Typhoon Maemi has strengthened markedly within the last twelve
hours. As of early morning Tuesday, EDT, Maemi is over the western
Philippine Sea 250 miles south-southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan.
Heading towards the northwest at 11 mph, Maemi now wields highest
sustained winds of more than 130 mph. Already a dangerous storm, Maemi
may strengthen further before passing near the southern Ryukyu islands
of Japan between late Wednesday and late Thursday, local time. Okinawa
could get quite a pounding from this storm. Later, forecasts were for
a right-hand turn over the East China Sea, then a path threateningly
close to southwestern Japan and southeastern Korea.
Heavy snows buried the South Orkney Islands early this week. The
islands are set in ice-choked Antarctic seas northeast of the
Antarctica Peninsula where, within two to three days, snowfall was
three feet at the Orcadas station.
At Satna, northern Madhya Pradesh, India, two-day rainfall early
this week was 15.1 inches. Mean monthly rainfall in September is only
6.9 inches.
