Winchester VA:
Another heavy rain event to report on, albeit it happened last
Wednesday.
We had several days of scattered showers & t-storms last week in the mid
Atlantic. Some areas had downpours, on top of the rains that fell with
the Aug 27/28th storms. The NWS issued the first flash flood watch for
my area Monday am, Sept 1st. The watches were renewed at times thru
Wednesday, despite the lack of heavy rainfall here. The threat excisted
however, & many nearby counties had a much lower flash flood threshold.
The watch was in affect Wednesday afternoon, & expired at 4pm. It was
renewed, but was not scheduled to go in affect again until 12am
Thursday, for a threat of several inches of rain over night & Thursday
am.
Thunderstorms began developing about 4pm in the eastern WV. They drifted
east reaching the Shenandoah Valley about 5:30pm. Some had heavy rain, &
others formed behind the first cells.
Shenanoah Co (1 county to my south) had a severe t-storm warning about
6pm for a rotating cell. Heavy rains continued, a flash flood warning
was issued. Three hour totals show an estimated 5" max near Strasburg VA
(junction of I-81 & I-66) and general 3-4" totals in northern Shenandoah
Co & southern Frederick Co (The county which i live).
I heard of a few flooded basement calls in the Middletown-Stephens City
area (about 7 miles to my south).
Meanwhile, heavy thunderstorms moved out of the Martinsburg WV area
toward Hagerstown MD.
Between 9 & 9:45pm, i heard numerous "emergency flooding conditions" on
my scanner for Washington Co MD. That term implies that water is rapidly
rising in a home or business & threatening electrical supply and/or
life. I also heard several water rescues from vehicles, and a few
reports of building or foundation collapses. In one case, a crew asking
for sand bags. A fire station had a supply of pumps made available to
other county companies, & the supply lasted less than an hour.
I knew that Washington Co/Hagerstown MD had a flash flood warning
already. But i called the NWS about 9:35pm to relay what i heard on the
scanner. Within several minutes, after making thier phone calls, the NWS
updated the warning with much stronger warning (see 2nd link below).
Radar estimated three hour totals of 3-5" just south of Hagerstown MD.
I had checked several sources for totals and came with a few on my own:
>From Wunderground.com,
unindentified weather station in Fredericktown (4 miles to my south):
3.97"
Greg Keefer, NWS observer near Hagerstown MD: 2.87"
>From 4-winds & AWS:
E Russell Hicks MS, Hagerstown MD 3.51"
Additional totals in the 3rd link below.
And the pre-scheduled flas flood watch was cancelled before it's
midnight start time.
Here in Winchester, I measured 1.01" for Wednesday (just 4 miles south
about 4" fell). My month to date total is now at 1.85", and no rain is
in the forecast this work week.
