From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Sun Sep 07 2003 - 10:40:01 EDT

September 7, 2003 8:50 a.m.

Early Sunday, EDT, Tropical Storm Maemi was nearing typhoon
strength over the western North Pacific. The storm was centered near
18.5 degrees north and 136 degrees east. This is about 680 miles
northwest of Guam and 755 miles southeast of Okinawa. With sustained
winds estimated to be 70-75 mph and peak gusts around 90 mph, Maemi
was heading towards the northwest at 17 mph. It is expected to remain
on this heading through Tuesday. eventually threatening Okinawa and
the rest of the Ryukyu Islands. Afterwards, it may turn north toward
the Korean Peninsula.

The other two Pacific tropical depressions, Jimena near the Date
Line, and Kevin over the east, have dissipated.

Blizzards swept over parts of Antarctica Friday into Sunday. At
Georg Von Neumayer, sustained winds averaged 40-50 during this time
while temperatures hovered just below zero and blowing snow caused
whiteouts. This made for a realfeel temperatures near 45 below. At
Casey, winds were even stronger, reaching well over 70 to as high as
100 mph. There, temperatures were in the lower teens and there were
also blinding curtains of blowing snow.

In Vietnam, Song Tu Tay was drenched by 3.5 inches of rain within
12 hours time on Saturday.

In South America, summerlike heat clashing with more seasonable
late-winter chill fueled massive thunderstorms over parts of northern
Argentina and Uruguay Saturday into Sunday. In Argentina,
thunderstorms dropped over 3 inches of rain in short order on Mar del
Plata, a coastal resort south of Buenos Aires, on Saturday. Rainfall
right around Buenos Aires was mostly a half-inch to an inch, but
parts of southern Uruguay, including the Montevideo area, had close
to 2 inches.

The former Soviet republics of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and
Kazakhstan had searing heat on Saturday with many locations setting
highs above 100 degrees. A common high of 104 degrees was shared by
several of these, the farthest north of which was Kalmykovo,
Kazakhstan, located north of the Caspian Sea at a latitude of 50
degrees north (farther north than most of the U.S. border>. Average
highs in this area of the world are currently in the upper 70s to
lower 80s, so this would be 20 or more degrees above normal. By early
afternoon Sunday, much of this region was again registering
temperatures of 100 degrees or above, though a strong cold front was
approaching from the northwest.
