The newest tropical storm over the western North Pacific Ocean
has been named: Maemi. As of early Saturday morning, EDT, Maemi is
more than 300 miles west-northwest of Guam. Packing highest sustained
winds of 45 mph, Maemi is headed towards the west-northwest at 15
mph. Maemi is forecast to strengthen markedly over the next two to
three days while heading mostly towards northwest. Before being
named, this weather maker dumped 4.7 inches of rain upon Agana, Guam.
Powerful Hurricane Fabian, a category-3 storm on the
Saffir-Simpson scale, delivered a severe blow to Bermuda on Friday.
The large hurricane unleashed top sustained winds of 100-105 mph and
peak gusts of about 130 mph at the Naval Air Station at the
northeastern end of the island. Winds of this magnitude undoubtedly
caused much damage.
Two Pacific tropical depressions, Jimena near the Date Line, and
Kevin over the east, were dissipating as of early Saturday, EDT.
Friday, 90-degree heat reached into Canada from interior British
Columbia to southeastern Saskatchewan. Osoyoos, BC, hit 99 degrees.
In Alberta, Lethbridge observed 93 degrees whereas a high of 95 was
set at Coronach, Saskatchewan.
Blazing heat that seared mid-southern South America Friday was
remarkable not only for its timing -- Southern winter has not yet
ended -- but for its freakishly low humidity. At San Juan, Argentina,
in the shadow of 20,000-foot Andean peaks, the high of 100 degrees
coincided with dew points more than 40 degrees below zero. As for
relative humidity, it was effectively nil. Sere, parching winds kicked
up choking dust in this near desert. Farther east, Rio Cuarto, where
the average high would be 65 degrees, Friday's high was 100 -- a
35-degree departure. The area of 100-degree heat was vast, spanning
much of northern Argentina, Paraguay and reaching into southeastern
Bolivia. On exceptionally hot spot was Las Lomitas, Argentina, which
reached 109 degrees.
