September 4, 2003 10:11 a.m.

In Russia, 90-degree heat reached the heart of western Siberia
Thursday. At Maysk, the high of 91 degrees was about 30 degrees above
average for early September. And for much of Kazakhstan, a full-
blown heat wave was underway with 100-degree heat over the western
deserts. At Atyrau near the northern Caspian Sea, it was the
third-straight day of at least 100 degrees.

The weak Tropical Depression Jimena, its winds less than 30 mph,
is drifting towards the Date Line Thursday. Once beyond the Date
Line, Jimena could re-strengthen to become a tropical storm.

A new tropical depression came to life over the eastern North
Pacific Ocean on Wednesday. Early in the morning of Thursday, EDT,
the depression holds top sustained winds near 35 mph about a center
which is more than 300 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico,
and 170 miles to the northwest of Mexico's Isla Socorro; movement was
sluggish towards the west-northwest at 7 mph. Forecasts allowed for
the possibility of storm status being reached within 12 to 24 hours
along with an overall track towards the west-northwest -- not a
threat to any land.

Some heavy thunderstorms rattled Spain's Balearic Islands in the
western Mediterranean Sea Wednesday. Within three hours, rainfall was
3.2 inches on the island of Ibiza, and the thunderstorms unleashed
wind gusts to 40 mph. At the same site, there was a soaking rain on
Tuesday, so total rainfall within 30 hours was 4.6 inches.

Beginning Wednesday, a severe storm unleashed steady, 40-50 mph
winds and whiteouts at the Mcmurdo station, Antarctica. Temperatures
hovered in the teens below zero. Thursday, steady winds reached 60
mph or more with readings still below zero. Meantime, inland and atop
the Antarctic ice cap, the Dome-"C" station observed a temperature of
105 degrees below zero.
