September 3, 2003 9:25 a.m.

Late Tuesday evening, local time, the powerful Typhoon Dujuan, at
the time packing highest sustained winds of about 120 mph, landed in
South China in Guangdong province near Hong Kong. Earlier, the storm
pounded southern Taiwan with gales and flooding rains. As the eye of
Dujuan passes slightly inland of Hong Kong, 65-mph winds were clocked
at the main airport. The nearby sprawling city of Shenzhen, in
Guangdong, had gusts to at least 80 mph.

Downpours lingered in eastern Taiwan long after Typhoon Dujuan had
left the area. At Taitung, heavy rains early Wednesday morning boosted
rainfall since the start of the week to 14.6 inches.

Northwestern Philippines, greater Manila included, has had
torrential rains lately. Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning,
local time, rainfall was 5-10 inches in and about Manila, and also at
Olangapo on western Luzon Island.

Jimena, as of early Wednesday morning, EDT, has been downgraded
to a tropical depression far to the southwest of Hawai'i. Headed
towards the Date Line, this depression could re-strengthen to become
a tropical storm.

Within six hours, a downpour unloaded 5.6 inches of rain upon
Boxian, China.

Moscow, Russia, was doused by 1.8 inches of rain Monday to early
Tuesday, local time. This rainfall is roughly 70% of the average
rainfall for all of September.

Wednesday, the Mawson station on the shores of East Antarctica
was battered by winds clocked steadily at 90-95 mph. This
wind storm also had blinding whiteouts at temperatures hovering near
10 degrees.
