[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Monday, Sep 01

From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Mon Sep 01 2003 - 10:40:01 EDT

September 1, 2003 9:18 a.m.

Sunday brought blistering heat to the southern Balkan Peninsula.
In Greece, 100-degree heat was widespread inland, even along lee
shores of the islands. Highs of 103 degrees were set on the island of
Milos, and at Lamia, and 105 at Larisa. Southern Bulgaria also
sweltered -- Svilengrad hit 105 degrees, Sandanski had a high of 104
and the mercury hit 103 in Chirpan. Turkey's sliver of the Balkan
Peninsula reached 103 at Edirne. Monday, southward cooling reached
into Greece, but Lamia hit 100 degrees early in the afternoon.

Monday, dangerous Typhoon Dujuan is aimed for the Luzon Strait and
a brush with southern Taiwan. Before daybreak, EDT, the eye of Dujuan
is 120 miles southeast of Hengchun, Taiwan. Packing highest sustained
winds of more than 135 mph, Dujuan is headed westbound at 17 mph.
Dujuan's nearest pass to southern Taiwan is slated for early Tuesday
morning, local time; within another 24 hours, the typhoon was seen
threatening southern mainland China including greater Hong Kong.

Amongst coldest reporting weather stations lately, other than in
Antarctica, has been that at Shelagontsy in the vast Sakha republic
of Siberian Russia. Respective lows Saturday through Monday were 15,
15 and 13 degrees. But this early-morning chill has been no match for
the waning late-summer sun. Respective highs for the same three days
have been 57, 63 and 66 degrees; thus, a 53-degree temperature rise
was observed within about 10 hours on Monday.
