[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Tuesday, Aug 19

From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Tue Aug 19 2003 - 10:40:03 EDT

August 19, 2003 9:27 a.m.

Some strong to severe thunderstorms rattled France Sunday, and
there were a few thundery downpours again on Monday. Sunday's
thunderstorms unleashed high winds and locally heavy rain. In the
south, wind gusts to 60 mph were clocked at Grenoble while
Montpellier, Clermont and Lyon each registered gusts of 50-55 mph.
Downpours hit greater Paris on Sunday; rainfall was 1.2 inches at the
Orly airport. Northeast of the capital city, Reims was soaked by 2.1
inches of rain within 24 hours to late Monday, local time.

Snow whitened southwestern South Africa early Tuesday. Uplands of
the Northern Karoo in the southwest had rain followed by snow in the
wake of a strong cold front. At Sutherland, snowfall was good for
several inches. Snow also fell at Calvinia and Okiep. At Capetown,
temperatures held in the upper 40s versus average daily highs in the
mid 60s. A dry sweep linked with the cold front was accentuated by
offshore wind flow at Mossel Bay, where 1% relative humidity was
observed early in the afternoon.

Monday, the western half of Canada was once again unusually hot
with 90-degree heat holding sway between southern Manitoba and the
Coast Ranges of British Columbia. Highs were shy of records in
the bigger cities, but the 100-degree mark was reached locally. At
Osoyoos, BC, hard on the Washington line, 104 degrees was registered.

The last one to two days has seen soaking rains over South Korea.
At Andong, rainfall was 8.7 inches within 24 hours ended Tuesday
evening, and 11.3 inches within two days.

Torrential rains pounded the foot of the Himalaya in Nepal early
this week. At Bhairawa, rainfall was 4.3 inches within 24 hours.
Given that rainfall may have been one or two times as much since
Sunday, flashing flooding and mudslides may well have happened.

Tuesday, Tropical Depression Vamco is east of Taiwan. Before
daybreak, EDT, Vamco is about 200 miles southeast of Taipei, Taiwan,
with highest sustained winds of nearly 35 mph. Vamco is clipping
towards the north at more than 25 mph. Vamco is forecast to skirt the
northern end of Taiwan before landing in eastern China, maybe as a
tropical storm, within a day or so.

Tuesday, the tropical depression classed as "12W" is showing
renewed vigor over the open Philippine Sea. Before daybreak, EDT,
this depression is more than 1000 miles northeast of Manila,
Philippines, with highest winds of almost 35 mph, and a northwesterly
heading at 17 mph. The weather maker is forecast to take a turn
towards the west over open seas within a day or so, and is also seen
as becoming a tropical storm.
