The western North Pacific Ocean has a new tropical depression.
Early Friday morning, EDT, the tropical weather maker had a center
about 400 miles southeast of Guam. its highest winds only 30 mph, it
was heading towards the west-northwest at 15 mph. It was forecast to
grow into a tropical storm within a day or two while aiming for the
southern Mariana Islands. Thus, Guam may be in for storm-strength
squalls on Sunday, local time.
Winds far above hurricane strength this week have blasted the
Casey station on East Antarctica. The height of the severe blizzard
came Thursday into Thursday night as winds of a steady 90 to 110 mph
were clocked. Gusts may well have been higher by another 10 to 20
mph. Casey is on the Budd Coast directly south of Australia.
Thursday, cooling from the Atlantic Ocean brought the latest heat
wave to an end in Europe northward and westward from the Alps. But
high heat was still on the loose, only it lay farther to the south
and east. This was Hungary's hottest day, not only of this heat wave,
but for more than 10 years, as Budapest soared to 103 degrees. The
plains of northern Serbia also registered 100 degrees, as did the
Montenegro capital, Podgorica. A scattering of 100-degree highs were
set in Romania, and Bulgaria had 103 degrees at Ruse. The heat went
on unbroken in Spain, Portugal and Italy, where hot spots hit 100 to
105 degrees.
Friday, torrential rains pelted southern and southeastern Japan
for a second-straight day. At Tokyo, rainfall was 8.8 inches within 48
hours. Nearby, Omaezaki picked up 11.4 inches, and the island of
Oshima, 12.4 inches. Earlier, Osaka, in the southwest, had 5.4 inches.
Moscow, Russia, collected as much rain as one would expect in all
of August in just a couple of days early this week. Rainfall was 3.0
inches here Sunday night to late Wednesday evening, local time. Of
this, 2.0 inches fell within 12 hours early on Wednesday from thundery
downpours. The average August rainfall is 3.0 inches. This capital
city has not been alone in this wet weather. Indeed, while western
Europe has suffered through an unrelenting heat wave induced, in part,
by an upper-atmospheric ridge, some far eastern parts of the continent
have been locked beneath an unsettled, rainy trough.
Thursday was another sweltering day on the open plains of central
Canada. In Saskatchewan, Estevan set a new daily high mark with 99
degrees. In Manitoba, Carberry hit 98 degrees.
Osoyoos, in southern British Columbia, reached a fiery 105
degrees on Thursday.
An unusually hot and dry weather pattern persisted over the
Bermuda Islands on Thursday as afternoon temperatures again reached 90
degrees. Through the first 14 days of August, there were 13 highs of
90 or 91 degrees. While the average high during this stretch is 86
degrees, the moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean typically keeps
the temperature from reaching 90 degrees. In fact, 4 of the last 10
summers here had no 90-degree days at all. Thursday was the 18th day
this year to reach this threshold. As stated, it has been abnormally
dry as well. Rainfall from June 25th through Thursday was 1.3 inches,
less than one-fifth of average. In stark contrast, 10.7 inches of rain
was collected during August 7-14 last year.
