Fiery heat burned much of western Europe again on Tuesday. Like
many recent days, much of France endured 100-degree heat. Hottest
among the many hot spots was Gourdon where 106 degrees was reached.
Toulouse, Montelimar and Troyes each registered a high of 105. Paris'
Orly airport soared to 104 degrees; this was about 30 degrees above
average. Much of Spain withstood afternoon temperatures near or above
100 degrees as well. Especially hot were Cordoba at 109 degrees and
Girona at 106. In Portugal, Evora spiked to 107 degrees while both
Castelo Branco and Braganca climbed to 103. Alghero, Sardinia, Italy,
registered a high of 103 degrees, and there were many sites on the
Italian mainland to reach 100. Highs in the middle and upper 90s were
widespread in Switzerland, Germany and in wide areas of Belgium and
the Netherlands, but there were hotter spots, too. In Germany,
Wurzburg, Frankfurt, Trier and Karlsruhe each peaked at 100-102
degrees. The 100-degree mark was also breached in Luxembourg.
Wednesday, cooling waft southward into the heart of Europe behind
a weak cold front. Early in the afternoon, London, England, was nearly
80 degrees, still almost 10 degrees above average, but 20 degrees
below the all-time high of 100 set on Sunday. In France, Paris had
about 90 degrees, or 10 degrees below yesterday's reading at the same
time. Even so, it was 15 degrees above the mean daily high -- still
downright hot. In Germany, Bonn, which had reached 102 degrees on
Tuesday, was comparatively cool with 86 degrees on Wednesday.
Here, it was still much hotter than average.
Whereas the end was at hand for the hottest weather in
northwestern Europe, blistering heat made inroads across middle
Europe. Early Wednesday afternoon, 100 degrees was reached at Vienna,
Austria, and Ceske Budejovice, Czech. Bratislava, Slovakia, read 99,
and Berlin, Germany, hit 95.
Al Qaysumah, Saudi Arabia, baking at 117 degrees at mid afternoon
on Wednesday, was whipped by 35-mph winds. The winds, in turn stirred
up clouds of thick dust that cut visibility to one hundred yards.
Sunday became the hottest day on record in the United Kingdom
as an intense heat wave continued. At London's Heathrow Airport,
the mercury reached 100.2 degrees, the first 100-degree reading
ever recorded in England. Meantime, nearby Gravesend, Kent,
registered 100.6 degrees, setting England's new all-time high mark.
The old record for all of the U.K. had been 98.8 degrees recorded
in Cheltenham on August 3, 1990.
Wynyard, Saskatchewan, observed a high of 103 degrees on Tuesday;
Monday's high was 102. At Estevan, Tuesday's high of 98 was two degrees
shy of the daily record high.
An unusually hot and dry weather pattern persisted over the
Bermuda Islands on Tuesday as afternoon temperatures again were near
90 degrees. Through the first 11 days of August, there were 10 highs
of 90 or 91 degrees. While the average high during this stretch was 86
degrees, then moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean typically keeps
the temperature from reaching 90 degrees. In fact, 4 of the last 10
summers here had no 90-degree days at all. Monday was the 15th day
this year to reach this threshold. As stated, it has been abnormally
dry as well. Rainfall from June 25th through Monday was 1.3 inches or
less than one-fifth of average. In stark contrast, 10.7 inches of rain
was collected during August 7-14 last year.
