[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Tuesday, Aug 12

From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Tue Aug 12 2003 - 10:40:01 EDT

August 12, 2003 9:31 a.m.

Sunday became the hottest day on record in the United Kingdom
as an intense heat wave continued. At London's Heathrow Airport,
the mercury reached 100.2 degrees, the first 100-degree reading
ever recorded in England. Meantime, nearby Gravesend, Kent,
registered 100.6 degrees, setting England's new all-time high mark.
The old record for all of the U.K. had been 98.8 degrees recorded
in Cheltenham on August 3, 1990.

Monday brought no relief from the heat wave over much of western
Europe. Highs of 100 degrees or higher were registered in many
sections of Portugal, Spain and France as well as in parts of Italy.
In Portugal, Evora climbed to 106 degrees and the capital, Lisbon, was
far above its 79-degree average high in reaching 103. Hottest among
many Spanish hot spots was Cordoba where a high of 108 degrees was
set. Leading the way among observation sites in France was Montelimar
with a high of 105 degrees, but Paris' Orly airport was nearly as hot
with a second-consecutive 103-degree maximum. Northern Italy had highs
of 102-105 degrees at Verona, Milano and Piacenza. The heat waned in
much of the United Kingdom Monday, but parts of southeastern England
withered again. London's Heathrow airport soared to 93 degrees.

Tuesday, while England cooled meaningful, blistering heat still
baked much of western Europe as of early afternoon. In France, Paris
had its sixth day of 100-degree heat thus far in August. Germany had
100 degrees at Bonn, and Luxembourg neared 100 degrees. Italy, Spain
and Portugal had temperatures of at least 100 degrees early in the
afternoon.

A hot blast baked the plains of western Canada Sunday and Monday.
While Sunday brought 100-degree heat to southern Alberta, Saskatchewan
was hottest on Monday. Wynyard reached 101 degrees, and Regina set a
new daily record high with 96.

At Cox's Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh, three-day rainfall ended
late Tuesday, local time, was 10.6 inches.

The two named cyclones over the eastern North Pacific Ocean,
Hilda and Guillermo, both have weakened to tropical depressions as of
early Tuesday morning. Both are forecast to dissipate within a day or
two.
