August 7, 2003 8:52 a.m.

Typhoon Etau moved very close to Okinawa Thursday morning, EDT.
The powerful storm produced wind gusts to 92 mph at Naha, and Kadena
reported a gust to 104 mph. Following the strike on Okinawa, Etau hit
another smaller island, Okino Erabu, about 90 miles to the northeast.
There, winds gusted to 94 mph shortly before the eye of the storm
passed overhead. In the eye of the storm, winds of 10-16 mph were
reported for about two hours before gusts over 65 mph resumed from
the opposite direction. Typhoon Etau is expected to continue on a
northeasterly track for the next day or so, producing damaging winds
on some of the other Ryukyu islands. By mid afternoon, local time,
the powerful storm will make landfall on mainland Japan, likely on
western Shikoku or far eastern Kyushu. At that time, top sustained
winds could be well over 100 mph, with gusts close to 150.

The severe heat wave which has gripped western Europe lately
persisted on Wednesday. Highs above 90 degrees were widespread from
Portugal and Spain to Italy, Switzerland, western Germany, France and
the Low Countries. Many of these areas withered under 100-degree heat.
Indeed, most of France reached 100 degrees or greater, including Paris
where the 104-degree top reading was about 30 degrees higher than
average. Elsewhere in France, Montelimar registered a high of 105
degrees and several sites peaked at 103. In Portugal, Evora spiked to
105 degrees and the capital, Lisbon, recorded 100. Cordoba, Spain, set
a high of 106 degrees for a second straight day; Monday was even
hotter, 108 degrees. Italian hot spots included Firenze at 105
degrees, Grosseto at 104 and Ferrara at 103. Trier, Germany, notched
100 mid-afternoon degrees. Highs in the middle and upper 90s were set
throughout Belgium and in parts of the Netherlands. The heat also
reached to the United Kingdom with highs above 90 in some of
southeastern England. Astounding was the 95-degree high at London's
Heathrow airport. Not only was this nearly 25 degrees above average,
but it was within 4 degrees of the alltime record high for the UK
which is 98.8 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.1 degrees Celsius.

Ironically, the United Kingdom's Channel Islands off the coast of
northwestern France underwent dramatic cooling on Wednesday. Hemmed
in by clouds and thick fog, temperatures hovered in the lower and
middle 60s on both Jersey and Guernsey whereas Tuesday saw peak
temperatures of 93 to 95 degrees.

Much of the far southeast of Canada was dealt heavy rain during
the first half of the week. Rainfalls of 1-3 inches were common
through Wednesday afternoon from southern Quebec to New Brunswick and
Nova Scotia. Some rainy standouts included Sherbrooke, Quebec, with
5.2 inches of rain, Charlevoix, QB, with 3.8 inches, Riviere-du-Loup,
QB, with 3.7 inches and Western Head, Nova Scotia, with 3.7 inches.

As of late Wednesday, local time, 24-hour rainfall was 6.8 inches
at Haeju, North Korea. At Kaesong, 5.4 inches fell within 12 hours.

Wednesday, Pskov, Russia, observed 4 inches of rain within 12
hours. This easily topped the mean monthly rainfall for August.
