August 6, 2003 9:59 a.m.

Wednesday, Typhoon Etau steamed over the western Philippine Sea
southeast of Okinawa. As of early morning, EDT, the core of Etau
was within 200 miles south-southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Headway
was towards the north-northwest at 15 mph whereas highest sustained
winds were about 110 mph. Etau was forecast to pass threateningly
close to Okinawa within 12 to 18 hours, and later, some of the Ryukyu
Islands farther north. Recurving towards the northeast, Etau was seen
crossing land in the southern mainland of Japan on Friday, local time.

A heat wave has tightened its hold upon western and southwestern
Europe this week. Tuesday, most of France sweltered in 100-degree
heat, including greater Paris, and some sites topped 105 degrees.
Tuesday also saw 100-degree heat in much of Italy between Rome and
the foot of the Alps. Wednesday, 100-degree heat was back by midday
in France, Italy and Spain. In the areas of Paris and Rome,
temperatures were 1-3 degrees higher than they were at the same time
Tuesday. The English Channel proved no barrier to the heat for the
British archipelago. Tuesday saw 90-degree heat in some of southern
England, greater London included, also on the Channel Islands of
Guernsey and Jersey. Valley, on Anglesey in northwestern Wales, set a
high of 91 degrees versus a mean daily high of 65. Wednesday, the
United Kingdom was abuzz with talk about the heat, and forecasters
eyed the all-time record high of 37.1 degrees Celsius, or 98.8
degrees Fahrenheit. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had not really been
threatened, but Wednesday was looking a bit hotter. Early-afternoon
readings of at least 90 degrees were plentiful in the south, the
Midland, and near the east coast as far north as Humberside and
Kingston upon Hull. Cambridge registered 93 degrees with an apparent
temperature of nearly 100.

As of late Wednesday, local time, 24-hour rainfall was 6.8 inches
at Haeju, North Korea. At Kaesong, 5.4 inches fell within 12 hours.

Wednesday, Pskov, Russia, observed 4 inches of rain within 12
hours. This easily topped the mean monthly rainfall for August.
