Mobile and Birmingham had record three-month rainfall
totals in the May-July period, more than doubling
their normal rain, the National Weather Service
reported Monday.
Georgia and Mississippi shared in the unusual wetness,
with communities in those states recording May-July
periods that were among their wettest.
While many Alabamians have already seen extensive
property damage from flooding this year, all the rain
has helped the state recover from an extended drought,
National Weather Service spokesman Brian Peters said.
"In general all the wet weather has been good," Peters
said. "We've been experiencing about 12 or 14 straight
years of relative dryness. All this rain is filling up
our reservoirs, which is very good."
Mobile received 39.65 inches of rain between May 1 and
July 31, the Weather Service said, the most in 123
years of record keeping. Normal for that period is
17.65 inches.
