The first half of the week saw high heat bake much of Portugal.
The capital city, Lisbon, for example, recorded highs of 99 and 101
degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, whereas an average day
at the end of July would have a maximum temperature in the upper 70s.
There were hotter spots, too. Evora surged to 105 degrees Tuesday and
107 Wednesday. Castelo Branca set highs of 100 and 101 degrees on
these two days.
For a third-straight day, hot, dusty winds blew into Kuwait
City, Kuwait, on Thursday. Wednesday's 15 to 30-mph winds sent sand
and dust through the air, thereby cutting the visibility to one-half
of a mile. Temperatures hovered between 100 and 110 degrees.
Thursday's dust clouds were not as thick, but no doubt were
unpleasant just the same.
Thursday, Lishui, in southeastern China, set another high
temperature above 100 degrees -- it was at least 107 degrees by mid
afternoon. Thus, of July's 31 days, 28 had 100-degree heat, and the
days that topped out short of 100 reached 99 degrees. The mean high
for the month was 103 degrees, or 8 degrees above the climatological
mean for July.
Most of China's populous heartland, from the tropical south to the
middle North China Plain, has sweltered in oppressive, even
life-threatening, heat this week. Each day, mid-afternoon apparent
temperatures have been 115 to 130 degrees over an area home to
hundreds of millions of souls. Nighttimes have "cooled" to a muggy 80
to 85 degrees in many instances.
Anomalous heat has dominated most of Europe this month and has
been especially so in northwestern Russia. At St Petersburg, the
monthly departure from average is more than 11 degrees, and the last
three days have reached the upper 80s -- 20 degrees above the mean
high for this time of year.
Wednesday, an inland heat wave tightened its grip over southern
British Columbia, Canada. One hot spot, Lytton, reached 105 degrees,
this after highs of 102 and 104 degrees set on Monday and Tuesday,
respectively.
