[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Tuesday, Jul 29

July 29, 2003 9:44 a.m.

Parts of southern Spain endured abnormally hot weather Sunday and
Sunday night. The seaside city of Malaga, for example, registered a
high of 105 degrees on Sunday whereas the average high was about 87.
By dawn Monday, the temperature had fallen no lower than 84 degrees;
this low was about 16 degrees above average. Moderating onshore winds
set in by midday Monday and kept afternoon temperatures in the lower
to middle 80s. Italy, meantime, registered 103 degrees at Cagliari,
on Sardinia, and 101 at Olbia and Grosseto.

Some of far southern Chile's islands were soaked by heavy rain
through the weekend and into early Monday. Rainfall on the tiny
Evangelistas group of islands, for example, was 7.7 inches during the
72 hours to mid-morning Monday.

Meanwhile, parts of middle South America have had barely had any
rain at all this month. Portions of far northern Argentina and
Paraguay have been especially dry. The Paraguayan capital, Asuncion,
collected just 0.01 of an inch of rain for July through Sunday, and
Monday was dry as well through midafternoon. On average, the city
would received 1.92 inches of rain through July's first 27 days. The
last 12 days of June were dry here, too, so rainfall from June 19
through Monday was a mere 0.01 of an inch.

Lishui, Zhejiang, China, has stretched its string of sweltering,
100-degree days. Tuesday, which heated to at least 105 degrees, made
for 26 of 29 days having at least 100 degrees so far this month. The
other three days all reached 99. The monthly mean high is about 95
degrees. At Shanghai, Tuesday, like Monday, brought 100-degree
mid-afternoon heat steamy enough for apparent temperatures of 110 to
120 degrees. It was the seventh 100-degree day for the teeming city.
The sheer weight of the high humidity on human discomfort was well
borne-out at Xihua, eastern Henan. Three-straight days through
Tuesday had mid to upper 90s, dew points of 80 to 85 degrees, and
apparent temperatures rising above 130 degrees daily.

Southern France is in the midst of a drought said to be the worst
in 25 years. Rivers are abnormally low, crops shriveling and water
supplies waning. Much of the nation has, since the first of the year,
had one-third to two-thirds of mean rainfall. Moreover, temperatures
have been 2 to 4 degrees above average, thereby giving evaporation a
corresponding boost.

Sutherland, South Africa, warmed under full winter sunshine to 68
degrees Monday, then 70 degrees Tuesday. No big deal. But what a big
deal Tuesday's morning low -- 8 degrees! Down sixty degrees one
night, then up at least as much the next day.
