Monday, Tropical Storm Soudelor strengthened at sea east of
northern Philippines. As of early morning, EDT, the core of the broad
storm was 315 miles northeast of Manila, whence it was headed
northwards at 11 mph with sustained winds nearing 70 mph. Soudelor was
forecast to head northwards to near the southern Ryukyu Islands of
Japan within another two days or so, and then to near the southwestern
mainland of Japan after midweek. Along the way, Soudelor was seen as a
candidate for typhoon status.
In its brush with eastern Philippines, Soudelor unloaded
torrential rains. At Catarman, Samar Island, rainfall linked to
Soudelor was more than 15 inches, and it was about as much at Virac
on the same island.
Monday, Southwestern Asia sweltered as it is wont to do this time
of year. Readings of at least 110 degrees were spread widely from
Saudi Arabia east to Pakistan and northwestern India. In Pakistan,
where early days of the month had 120s, 117 degrees was tops at Sibi
and Bahawalnagar. By mid afternoon, temperatures had reached at least
117 degrees at Ahwaz, Agha Jari and Abadan, all in southwestern Iran;
Al Hufuf, Saudi Arabia; 117 at El 'Ayn and Fujayrah, UAE; and 118 at
Fahud, Oman.
Monday, at the Dome-"C" station of East Antarctica, the
temperature held at, or below, minus-100 degrees for a second straight
24-hour stretch. Lowest was 103.7 degrees below zero last weekend.
