June 14, 2003 9:45 a.m.

Saturday, Tropical Storm Soudelor remained a storm of moderate
strength somewhat east of the Philippines. As of early morning, EDT,
Soudelor was located about 410 miles east-southeast of Manila,
Philippines, or about 130 miles east of northern Samar Island. The
storm was headed towards the northwest at 8 mph with highest
sustained winds of 50 mph. Soudelor was forecast to take a
northwesterly, and later, northerly, tack over the next few days. In
so doing it would brush -- maybe cross -- eastern and northeastern
shores of the Philippines. If far enough offshore, it might even
become a typhoon.

Friday, wide areas of southern Europe endured fiery heat.
During the afternoon, there were plenty of temperatures in the 90s
from Portugal to the Balkan Peninsula. Many of the highest readings
came from Spain and Italy, however. Bilbao, Spain, soared to 106
degrees under strong sunshine whereas this city in the far north of
the nation has an average high of 68 at mid-June. A shift in wind from
off the Bay of Biscay quickly brought cooling late in the afternoon
here -- the temperature fell 27 degrees in one hour! Elsewhere in
Spain, San Sebastian, Zaragoza and Granada all registered 100-degree
heat. Temperatures peaked near 100 degrees in Italy, meantime, at
Amendola, Treviso and Grosseto versus mean daily highs in the upper
70s and lower 80s. Saturday, as of midday, the heat wave was well
underway in some of these same areas. Italy saw nearly 100 degrees
(99) at Firenze and Guidonia, and 97 in the city of Rome. Olbia, on
the island of Sardinia, also read 97 degrees. In France, 97 degrees
was reached at Lyon and at Toulouse.

Heavy rains soaked southern Quebec, Canada, Friday and Friday
night. Rainfall was 1-2 inches over greater Montreal. South of the
city, Sainte-Clotilde-de-Chateauguay had 2.6 inches, and
Saint-Anicet, 2.4 inches.

A strong Southern storm belted southeastern Australia Friday and
Saturday. Chilling gales whipped Tasmania, the Bass Strait and
southernmost Victoria on the mainland. Rugged western Tasmania was
doused with heavy rains and small hail, and higher up, heavy rain and
snow. At Lake Saint Clair, Tasmania, water equivalent from two days
of heavy rain and snow was 2.8 inches. Soaking rain and bursts of
snow also hit Rosebery and Strathgordon, also in western Tasmania.

Friday, for a second-straight day, scattered severe thunderstorms
rattled greater Mexico City. At one observation site, Thursday's
late-day thunderstorm unleashed a 69-mph gust, then Friday's saw
76-mph gusts and near-zero visibility in driving rain and hail.
